Common Symptoms Of Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos Symptoms

Asbestos have been creating a problem for many for more then a decade now. Different asbestos related diseases have been found, unfortunately there is little or no awareness among the masses about the asbestos disease or asbestos symptoms. However, a few of the symptoms to asbestos related diseases have been listed below.

Asbestosis Symptoms

The signs and symptoms of asbestosis are non-specific, and many only show up many years after the asbestos exposure has ended. This is why it is difficult to diagnose any asbestos-related symptoms or diseases early on. Since asbestosis is a chronic progressive disease, the symptoms of the asbestos exposure will generally get worse after they start. Fortunately, the disease progresses slowly giving your doctor time to catch it.

Asbestosis has been called a mono-symptomatic disease because the earliest, most consistently reported, and most distressing asbestos symptom is shortness of breath, which has a slow and sinister development. The shortness of breath initially experienced will progressively get worse with time. Besides shortness of breath, other asbestos symptoms have been reported such as:

· A persistent and productive cough - this can be a symptom as common as shortness of breath. · Chest tightness · Chest pain · Restless sleep · Hemoptysis - coughing up of blood. · Fatigue · Appetite loss

Mesothelioma Symptoms

Another in the list of asbestos symptoms is the mesothelioma. The symptoms of mesothelioma can vary, but the most common general asbestos symptoms are:

· Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing · Coughing · Pain in chest or abdomen · Fluid in the chest, lungs, or abdomen · Weight loss · Loss of appetite · Inability to sleep · Husky voice · Difficulty swallowing

There are two types if mesothelioma: peritoneal mesothelioma and pericardial mesothemioma

Common asbestos symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma might include:

· Abdominal pain, acute to severe · Swelling of the abdominal region due to fluid accumulation · Breathing difficulties · Loss of appetite resulting in weight loss · Bowel obstruction · Nausea · Vomiting · Weakness · Fever · Anemia

Common asbestos symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma might include:

· Chest pain, ranging from uncomfortable to severe · Shortness of breath · Heart palpitations · Persistent coughing · Extreme fatigue after minimal activity or exertion

Lung Cancer

Unfortunately, the early stages of lung cancer may not have any asbestos symptoms. As the tumor grows in size, it can produce a variety of asbestos symptoms including:

· cough (especially one that doesn't go away or gets worse in character) · chest pain · shortness of breath · coughing up blood or bloody phlegm · new onset hoarseness or wheezing · recurrent problems with pneumonia or bronchitis · weight loss · loss of appetite · fatigue · bone pain · dizziness or double vision · numbness or tingling in your arms or legs · turning yellow (jaundice)

There are certain diagnoses methods developed which can be helpful in the detection of asbestos symptoms. The diagnosis can be done through the following

Pulmonary function tests - These simple tests measure how much air your lungs can hold and the airflow in and out of your lungs.

CT Scan - The CT (Computer Tomography) scan provides your doctor with a better and more detailed look at the lungs.

MRI - The MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create cross-sectional images of the head or body and has proven to be even more accurate than the CT scan, especially for diagnosing tumors or other problems with the lungs
